Encrypted iCloud backup

Backed up. Still unreadable to everyone else.

Losing a phone should not mean losing your vault. VaultBolt backs up to your own private iCloud database, but only after everything is encrypted on the device. Apple, VaultBolt and anyone with access to the cloud see ciphertext.

How it works

Encrypted iCloud backup, step by step.

Encrypted before upload

Files and the index are already encrypted; backup adds nothing readable.

Stored in your iCloud

Backups go to your private CloudKit database, counted against your own iCloud storage.

Restore with your phrase

On a new iPhone, enter your 12-word recovery phrase and each vault restores with progress.

Included free

Encrypted backup is on every plan, including free.

Clear status

See the last backup time, storage used and any problem, such as a full iCloud, in plain language.

More destinations later

Google Drive and Dropbox backup are planned for a later phase.

Honest limits

  • You need iCloud space and your Apple Account to back up.
  • Without your recovery phrase, a backup cannot be decrypted by anyone.

FAQ

Encrypted iCloud backup: common questions

Does VaultBolt back up to iCloud?

Yes. Backups go to your private iCloud database after encryption on the device, on every plan.

Can Apple see my VaultBolt backup?

Apple stores the encrypted data but does not have the key. It can see that backup data exists and its size.

What if I delete the app?

If backup was on, reinstall and restore with your recovery phrase. Without backup, deleting the app deletes the vault.
