Make a secret photo album on iPhone

iPhone doesn't let you put a password on a regular album, but you can still keep a private collection. Here are the three ways, from quickest to most private.

Short answerThe built-in option is the Hidden album: select photos, tap More (•••) and Hide. It locks with Face ID or your passcode. For a secret album with its own code that your iPhone passcode can't open, use a vault app like VaultBolt, which also supports folders inside each vault.

1. The Hidden album (built in)

Select photos → More (•••) → Hide. Find them in Collections → Utilities → Hidden. Turn off Settings → Apps → Photos → Show Hidden Album to remove it from view entirely.

2. A locked Photos app

Touch and hold Photos → Require Face ID. Every album, not just one, now needs authentication.

3. A private vault with folders

In VaultBolt, each vault has its own code and can hold folders and nested folders. Create a folder per topic, such as "Documents" or "Us", and move photos in. Each vault stays invisible from the others, and no screen lists how many exist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lock a specific album on iPhone?

No. Regular albums can't be locked. Only the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are locked, using Face ID or your passcode.

Can I have more than one secret album?

In Photos there is only one Hidden album. In VaultBolt you can create folders inside a vault, and separate vaults with their own codes.
