Recently Deleted: why deleted photos aren't gone

When you delete a photo on iPhone, it isn't deleted. It moves to Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. That safety net is great for mistakes and terrible for private photos you meant to remove.

Short answerDeleted photos stay in Photos → Utilities → Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. To remove them immediately, open Recently Deleted (it needs Face ID or your passcode), tap Select, choose the photos and tap Delete. With iCloud Photos on, do this once and it applies to all your devices.

Where deleted photos go

  1. You delete a photo. It moves to Recently Deleted.
  2. It stays there for up to 30 days, then iOS removes it permanently.
  3. With iCloud Photos on, it sits in Recently Deleted on every device signed in to your Apple Account.

Delete permanently, now

  1. Open Photos → Collections → Utilities → Recently Deleted.
  2. Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode.
  3. Tap Select, choose the items (or Delete All), and confirm.

Why this matters for vault apps

Most vault apps copy photos in. If you delete the originals afterwards, they move to Recently Deleted and stay there for a month, which defeats the point. VaultBolt's zero-copies clean-up walks through deleting originals, emptying Recently Deleted and checking iCloud Photos, then confirms when no copies are left.

Other places copies hide

  • Shared albums keep their own copy for everyone in them.
  • Messaging apps may have auto-saved the photo to your camera roll.
  • Old iPhone or computer backups taken before you deleted it.
  • Other cloud apps such as Google Photos or OneDrive, if they back up your camera roll.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Recently Deleted album locked?

Yes. On current iOS, Recently Deleted and Hidden are locked by default and need Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

Can photos be recovered after I empty Recently Deleted?

Not from the Photos app. They may still exist in an older device backup, in a shared album, or in another app that saved a copy.
